TOWNSEND SCHOOL BOARD FOCUSES ON ENROLLMENT GROWTH AND STRATEGIC PLANNING
Meeting highlights district achievements and updates across all levels
The Townsend School Board, led by Board Chairman Jason Noyes and Board Vice-Chairman Jason Kool, convened September 8 to address enrollment increases, staffing updates, and strategic planning initiatives across the district.
Enrollment Growth Across the District
The district welcomed increased enrollment across all school levels. Townsend Elementary School reported 400 students in PreK through Grade 5, representing a 40-student increase from September 2025. Elementary Principal Steven Cook highlighted several new initiatives designed to support student well-being, including school-based outpatient therapy services through Shodair Hospital and a care closet for at-risk students funded by a McKinney-Vento grant. The district also partnered with the Lions Club to provide vision screenings for second graders.
Townsend Middle School reported 149 total students in grades 6-8 and introduced new courses and staffing changes to accommodate the student population. Townsend High School reported 205 students in grades 9-12, with fall activities and events now underway across athletic and academic programs.
Facility and Operations Updates
The superintendent reported several maintenance and operational improvements, including emergency lighting panel replacements and resolution of recent power issues affecting district buildings. The board also reviewed ongoing maintenance needs and facility planning.
Strategic Initiatives
The district continued work on strategic planning efforts and board professional development, with board members attending legal conferences and participating in training sessions. The Superintendent's report also covered implementation of MCEL (Montana Core Educational Library) initiatives aimed at enhancing educational resources and instruction.

The board addressed several action items during the meeting, including budget approvals, personnel decisions, and approval of various contractual agreements necessary for district operations.
