The first slice of summer is always the sweetest.
The Rotary-hosted event, held on Wednesday, June 17, experienced wind but no rain and by evening the sun shone. People gathered around to listen to the Helena band “Up the Creek", featuring classic rock and roll with some western music thrown in.
Professional musician Rod Morrison plays acoustic guitar. He explained this group of musicians had been playing together for 3 or 4 years. They are scheduled to play at Lewis & Clark Brewery for a 40th class reunion in Helena. The band also included Ken Nelson on keyboards, Kirk Fandry on bass and vocals, and Scott Williams, the drummer.
Former Rotarian Ron Salladay initiated Slice of Summer many years ago when he was talking to some high schoolers who said Townsend needed outdoor music, fun for kids, and food. The event features several other nonprofits, including the Lions Club, whose members sell hamburgers and hot dogs, and Rotarians sell pizza and cotton candy. Parent-Teacher Association had a booth, as did Townsend Soccer Teams.
Little kids kept the bouncy toy alive, and older kids tried their hands and feet at climbing the Elkhorn Fellowship Church climbing wall. High School club ‘Bulldogs and Beyond’ sold soda floats to earn money for their 2028 trip to Spain and Portugal, according to Kathryn Six, one of the servers.
Emcee Doug Sitton, who is a Rotarian, announced the coming 4th of July Parade and Celebration, and the Summer Solstice Event on June 20th at the Lodge hosted by Broadwater Community Theater. Afterward, he shared his talents by singing “Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog” with the band.
