Normally, the cross-country team would not be happy about snow in early October, but last week turned out to be the exception. After a couple of rough days of outdoor practice, it was announced that the Helena Crosstown meet would still happen, but with a relocation across town to Centennial Park.

Instead of running the hills of Bill Roberts Golf Course, they ran the mile-long walking path around the park three times. The temperature was cooler, but there was no wind or rain, which made for lightning-fast times for all.

What is normally a showdown between the Helena High Bengals and Helena Capital Bruins, the Crosstown Meet for the first time also included the Jefferson Panthers and our Bulldogs.

The gentlemen took the course first, with High’s Milo Kauffman crossing the line first. First for the Bulldogs was Gavin Greene (17:20 PR) in 11th with his best time ever in the last regular season race of his Bulldog career. Dallas Fligge (18:31) was 15th, with Clayton Rice (18:45 PR) in 17th and Rylan Hoveland (19:05 PR) in 20th. The trio of Luke Tullos (19:23 PR), Keaton Cavasos (19:43 PR), and Sam Flesch (20:25 PR) were back-to-back-to-back in 23rd, 24th, and 25th. The varsity squad scored eighty-six points to take third as a team.

Running alongside the varsity men but scoring separately was the men’s JV team. Isaiah Lapsley (19:40 PR) led the way in 19th, with Gavin Johnson (20:06 PR) not far behind in 27th. Rounding out the team were: Urijah Duede (21:34 PR) in 41st, Trey Coker (23:14 PR) in 50th, and Wyatt Coker (26:55 SR) in 55th. Wyatt’s finish was one of the highlights of the day, as he determinedly sprinted to the line to stop a competitor from passing him.

Approximately one hundred meters into the ladies’ race, Kyla Meissner took the lead and did not look back. She cruised across the finish line first, three miles later in her new record time of 18:19, which sets a new BHS school record at the 5K distance. Coming in 11th was Elaine MacDonald in 21:08. Finishing one after the other were: Addy Mosher (12:06 PR) in 22nd, Shalyn Sentinella (23:57 PR) in 23rd, and Bella McDaniel (24:22) in 24th. Tana Santi ran JV while logging her new PR of 25:02 to finish 21st.

At press time, the Bulldogs will be en route to Missoula for the 2025 MHSA State Cross Country Meet. They preview the course on Friday afternoon with the races taking place on the University of Montana Golf Course on Saturday, October 25th. The gentlemen will be on the course first with a start time of 11:30, while the ladies’ gun will blow at 12:30. Go Bulldogs!
