BHS Hort Class Finishes Landscape Bed at Elementary School
Patrick Plantenberg
Tree Board Chair
The Broadwater County High School Horticulture Class completed a landscaping bed at the new elementary school at 210 N. Pine on May 27th.
Patrick Plantenberg, Chair of the Townsend Tree Board and owner of Plants, etc., a local landscaping company, helped teach the class with Jemma Loughery. As part of the class, the students learned how to prune trees properly, plant trees properly, and correct common landscaping problems. All the work was done on the school campus.
Plantenberg tries to instill in the students a love for the green industry. Students are encouraged to think of alternatives to college if they don’t want to go to college. There are many jobs in lawn maintenance, landscaping, in garden centers, and at nurseries. Many of the students could get some experience and then start a local company. Townsend needs a young couple running a landscaping business and pruning trees in the wintertime.
