On Wednesday, April 30, the Class of 2025 took a field trip to Helena. They toured the Capitol building, attended a Supreme Court hearing and listened to the end of the legislative session. This is the last field trip that this class will take together, and they made some memories on the way. On the short drive to Helena, the bus was a ruckus as everyone talked with one another. It was even louder on the way back as they reviewed the events of the day. In an interview, Sawyer Horne and Maddie Schritz talked about their experience:
Sawyer Horne had a lot of fun. His favorite part was the end of the legislative session. Some people were giving speeches as they vacated their offices. This was their last session. Sawyer appreciated how much those who were leaving cared about our state. He learned a lot about the structure and history of the Capitol building. One of the things that he learned was that some scenes in the paintings in the Capitol aren't actually true; some of the events never happened. As he remembered his day he said, "My favorite part was the legislative session. Another part was playing with an apple in the parking lot at lunch!"
The next day in government classes, students who attended the hearing before the Supreme Court discussed the case. Mrs. Moldenhaur, the advisor and government teacher, who accompanied them, provided more insight about the case. She spent part of the class period answering questions and helping the students write their paragraphs about their day. Sawyer provided a brief overview of the case. He said, "The case was about a lady who was defending the man on trial saying he didn't want to be placed into a state hospital and the other people disagreed with her."
Maddie Schritz also attended the field trip. Her experience was similar to Sawyer’s. She is involved in art so she paid attention to all of the painting and murals around the Capitol Building. She especially enjoyed learning the history of the building. Her absolute favorite part was also sitting in the legislative session. She liked hearing the stories from those who were speaking. Touring the Capitol was an experience that she won't forget. She looks forward to learning more about the art and history that surrounds Helena and Montana.
