Townsend Designated a Tree City USA
Patrick Plantenberg
Tree Board Chair
The City of Townsend has been designated a Tree City USA for its efforts to manage its community forest in 2024. This is the 25th year that Townsend has been selected as a Tree City USA.
To be recognized as a Tree City USA, a community must meet four standards:
• Have a Tree Board.
• Have a community ordinance for tree care.
• Implement a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita.
• Have an Arbor Day Proclamation and Celebrate Arbor Day.
To celebrate Arbor Day the City of Townsend Tree Board celebrates Arbor Week by trying to plant as many trees as it can in a week’s time. The first tree is always planted with the 5th grade elementary school students and teachers.
This year, a Sensation Boxelder tree was planted on the southwest corner of the new elementary school building. The BCHS Horticulture Class also planted a couple of trees on the school campus last week.
The Townsend Tree Board thanks Graymont for helping purchase the trees to be planted across the community in 2025. The Tree Board received a Graymont Carbon Reduction Fund grant for the second year.
Without the continuing support of companies like Graymont, the City of Townsend, Broadwater County, other businesses in Broadwater County, service organizations, and private citizens, Townsend would not have a thriving community forest.
