On Saturday, April 19th, the Broadwater County Lions Club hosted the annual Easter Egg hunt at Heritage Park. It started promptly at 10 A.M. The kids were divided up into four age groups: 0- to 3-year-olds; 4- to 6-year-olds; 7- to 9-year-olds; and 10- to 12-year-olds. Each of the two lower age groups had 500 eggs to find, and each of the upper two age groups had 200 eggs to find. On the front page of last week’s MT43 paper, there was a photo of two older kids dressed up as an Easter Bunny and the Easter Lion taken during the 2024 Easter Egg hunt. Once again, the Bunny and Lion were present this year. All of the eggs are made of plastic, and each has chocolate inside it.
Prior to 10 A.M., the kids all lined up waiting for the city fire trucks driven by members of the Townsend City Fire Department. Townsend Chief Shawn Simon was there to sound the siren. As soon as the kids heard the siren, they just made a mad dash to find the eggs. It only takes about 10 minutes for the kids to gather up all the eggs.
Dela Chatriand is one of the five Lions Club members on the Easter Egg Hunt Committee. The committee members are Teena Larson, LeAnn Coffman, Sandi Booher, and Patti Hanson. It is a team effort.
According to Dela, “Lions sponsor the Easter Egg hunt, as a fun community event. Lots of you participate in the Easter Egg hunt. We started setting up the park at 8:30 A.M. Other members of the club volunteer their time. After the kids finish the hunt, prizes are given out. Some of the eggs have special tags on them identifying the age group, so that the kids who find these eggs are given a prize. Even if the kids find two or more eggs with these tags, they are only given one prize. The prize winners of the younger two groups get a stuffed animal, and five chocolate bunnies about one foot high are presented to the winners in the two older age groups. All participants are also given a bracelet. By 10:30 A.M., the prizes have been distributed, and the park has been cleaned up.
After this is over, we go to the hospital and the assisted living centers at Silver Springs and Serenity Point. The Easter Bunny and Easter Lion give each of the residents a stuffed animal.”
And, I got lucky! I fall into the 7-9 age group. I am 79! As I was leaving, Dela gave me one of those extra foot-high chocolate bunnies. Many thanks, it was delicious.
