Contests have a long history in the 4-H program and are a fun way for 4-H members to receive recognition, learn new skills and build confidence. This year, the 4-H County Contest Extravaganza took place on Sunday, March 16th at the Methodist Church and Broadwater High School.

Kicking off the afternoon was the Communications Contest. This was formerly known as the Speech and Demonstration Contest but has expanded to several different categories. In the senior division, Kaitlyn Noyes participated in Career Communications, where she is expected to complete a job application, cover letter, resume and job interview. She received a purple ribbon and the overall prize and is eligible to attend the Montana 4-H Congress in the event.

Moving on to the junior division of the Communications Contest, Calvin McCauley took the overall prize and a purple ribbon with his illustrated talk on parts of the pig. Also doing demonstrations or illustrated talks were Ryal Lancello and Addy Mosher with purple ribbons and Abigail McCauley with a blue ribbon. In the prepared speech category, Addy Mosher received a blue ribbon and MaKenzie Truesdell received a red ribbon. Addy Mosher also participated in impromptu speech and received a blue ribbon in that category.

Next was the Hooked-on Cooking Contest where members, ages 8-13, cook and develop skills for a safe, nutritious and proper presentation of food. The theme this year was “Chinese Challenge 2025: Year of the Snack”. Some participants incorporated the theme into their dish, while others decorated a baked item related to the theme. They could participate individually or with a partner. The overall winners, receiving a purple ribbon, were the team of Clara Weaver and Scarlett Watne. Blue ribbons were awarded to Grace McLaughlin and the team of Andrew Beatty and Jayden Flynn.

The Stir-Ups contest also took place. This is a cooking contest for members who are 13-18 years old. They are given a list of possible ingredients and must prepare an appealing, nutritious meal using the “Chinese Challenge 2025: Year of the Snack” theme. A team consisting of Zoe Dabling and Taylor Teske took home the prize for the top meal and a purple ribbon. They are now eligible to attend the Montana 4-H Congress in this contest.

Cloverbuds, who are members 5 to 8 years old, were able to participate in an educational activity. The participants were Abigail Lancello, Evan McCauley, Molly McLaughlin, Cecelia Watne and Elston Flynn.

After the contests, participants played games, were recognized and received ribbons. Congratulations to all of the participants on a wonderful day! THANK YOU to all of the 4-H leaders, parents and judges who helped with the event! We couldn’t have done it without you!
