Bulldog Wrestling team members ended their season with the State Tournament in Billings on February 13-15. These three days were filled morning to night with matches. We had nine bulldogs attend the tournament. Three advanced to the last day. They were juniors Gavin Schmele and Parker Hunt, and senior Eric Humphreys. All the boys put their best effort forth and were able to place.

Eric Humphreys, known for his strength and determination, placed fifth overall at the state level. Throughout his entire last season he never missed an opportunity to be on the podium. His best tournament was in Choteau where he placed second overall. This was also his favorite tournament because a lot of the people on the team were able to receive a placement there. His biggest support through life is his dad and the Hunt family. They always support him no matter what he's facing or what his decision is. His favorite move is a single lake takedown. He described the Metra saying, “The environment was intimidating, but it was also full of excitement and anticipation. Overall, the season was full of emotions, but it was successful.”

Another phenomenal wrestler was Gavin Schmele, who placed fourth. Gavin also worked hard throughout his season and was able to improve tremendously from his first tournament this year. Returning to wrestling would be hard for anybody, but coming back from an injury that prevented wrestling last year was extremely difficult. Getting back into the rhythm of it slowly, but surely, paid off as he placed higher every weekend. His favorite tournament was the State Tournament. By staying in a positive mental state and being able to run around the Metra helps achieve success. He acknowledges the training in the last two weeks saying, “I appreciate my coaches and having Coach Leonard come into wrestle with me. His past knowledge helped train me and his size helped me prepare. We did top and bottom work which helped a lot during Divisionals and State.”

We couldn’t be prouder of the wrestling team. The team took more than four times the number of wrestlers to state than last year. The team members supported each other throughout the weekend and were cheering the entire time. Eric Humphreys ended his season with an incredible placement. We look forward to watching Gavin Schmele defend his place next year. With a lot of younger wrestlers, we also look forward to their seasons next year and are excited to see how they have improved.
