Kent Randall Wilcox was born on November 25, 1959, in Carmi, Illinois, to James Randall Wilcox and Joan Patricia Loftis Wilcox. He passed away on October 8, 2026, in Townsend, Montana.

Raised in Buffalo, Minnesota, Kent graduated from Buffalo High School in 1978 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana in 1982. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1983 to 1987. Following his military service, he returned to Montana and continued his education, earning a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Montana in 1995.

Kent dedicated much of his professional career to public service as a Performance Auditor with the Legislative Audit Division for the State of Montana. His job took him to many places across the state. Through his work, he demonstrated a strong commitment to integrity, accountability, and serving the citizens of Montana.

After his retirement, Kent spent several years in Pharr, Texas, but Montana’s mountains, rivers, and wide-open spaces eventually called him home. He returned to his beloved state and settled in Townsend, where he spent his remaining years engaged in activities he loved most.

Kent found great joy in the outdoors. He loved fishing, hiking, camping, and riding his Harley-Davidson through the landscapes he cherished. He treasured time spent with family and friends near and far. Kent was devoted to his dogs, who were constant companions throughout his life and who accompanied him on his outdoor adventures.

Those who knew Kent will remember him for his kindness, compassion, intelligence, and quiet generosity. He was deeply loved by his family and friends and touched many lives through his caring nature.

Kent faced hardships throughout his life that at times weighed heavily on him, yet he remained devoted to the people who mattered most to him and found meaning in family, friendship, and the outdoors. In his memory, we encourage everyone to reach out to friends, family members, neighbors, and colleagues. A simple conversation, a listening ear, or a small act of kindness can make a meaningful difference.

Kent was preceded in death by his parents, James and Joan Wilcox, and his cherished canine companions, Buddha, Misha, Keira, and Sasha. He is survived by his sister, Teresa Wilcox, and her husband, Terrence Barnhardt; his nieces, Mamie Barnhardt and Eva Barnhardt; his brother, Lane Wilcox, and his wife, Tammy Brand; his aunts, Sharon Anderson and Pamela Lane; and many cousins, extended family members, and friends.

In keeping with his wishes, Kent was cremated. One-half of his ashes will be buried with military honors at Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison, Montana, in recognition of his proud military service. The remaining half will be scattered on the Smith River, a place he held dear and one that reflected his deep appreciation for Montana’s natural beauty and outdoor traditions. It is also a place where he spent special time with family, and where his father’s ashes are also spread. The date and details of these ceremonies will be announced when arrangements are finalized.
