Shakespeare in the Parks performed Merchant of Venice at Heritage Park Sunday to an audience of over 100 Shakespeare lovers and some kids eating ice cream sodas.

Under a breezy, cool Montana fall evening, the crowd applauded at the end of each segment and especially when the actors kissed.

The themes of Shakespeare’s play involved antisemitism, conflicts between Christians and Jews, overextending one’s judgment to win the hand of a rich lady. From this iconic Shakespearean comedy came many well-known sayings in our culture, such as “taking a pound of flesh” or exacting revenge on someone. As always, Shakespeare’s plays are relevant to our culture today, exploring mercy, justice, and the consequences of prejudice.

The play was hosted by Townsend Area Chamber of Commerce, whose members would like to thank the sponsors of the show, including Broadwater Community Foundation, Townsend Rotary Club, Broadwater Community Theater, and several individuals.
