The Townsend Area Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce that Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will return to Heritage Park for its annual performance on Sunday, September 6th at 5:00 PM, bringing The Merchant of Venice to our community.

Now in its 54th season, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks has built a reputation for bringing professional theatre to rural and underserved communities across Montana and beyond. With a summer tour spanning over 60 towns in five states, the company operates on a foundational belief: Shakespeare belongs to everyone.

"We've been fortunate to host this performance for many years," said a spokesperson for the Chamber. "Heritage Park, with its mature trees and well-maintained grounds, provides the perfect setting for an evening of live theatre under the Big Sky."

About The Merchant of Venice:

Directed by Kevin Asselin, The Merchant of Venice explores timeless themes of justice, mercy, prejudice, and the human longing to belong. The play weaves together romance and courtroom drama as Bassanio seeks Portia's hand, Antonio enters a dangerous financial bond with Shylock, and the young Jessica risks everything to escape her father's house in search of love and freedom. Through these interwoven stories, Shakespeare examines the cost of exclusion and the transformative power of compassion—themes that resonate as powerfully today as they did over 400 years ago.

The performance will feature approximately 20 accomplished actors and staff, all committed to bringing Shakespeare's stories to life in an accessible, inclusive way.

A Free Community Gathering:

As always, admission is free, and the performance is family-friendly. Residents are invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair and settle in for an unforgettable evening of storytelling and community connection.

However, bringing Montana Shakespeare in the Parks to Townsend comes with real costs. The Chamber is still working to raise the funds needed to cover the company's visit and to provide meals for the acting troupe during their time in our community. If you'd like to support this cultural event and ensure it continues as a Townsend tradition, donations are welcome.

How to Donate:

Contributions can be made at Reading Leaves Bookstore in downtown Townsend or mailed to the Townsend Area Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 947, Townsend, MT 59644. Every donation helps bring this beloved performance to our community.
