A contract has been awarded for the Townsend North Asphalt Trail Stewardship project. The Broadwater Trails (BCT)program within the Broadwater County Development Corporation (BCDC) has signed a contract with Wharton Asphalt, Inc. of Billings, MT. Interstate Engineering helped BCT/BCDC in the original grant preparation that resulted in being awarded a Trail Stewardship Project grant administered through Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. That grant covered the contract costs for the project. Rotary, Broadwater County Trust Board and BCDC have supplemented the program to help cover the required match funds, administration, bid preparation and more funding will be needed to cover the field administration once the project begins.
Interstate Engineering solicited bids for BCT, and Wharton was the low bidder. They are currently working on street maintenance in Townsend. Wharton indicates they will perform the trail maintenance work in the latter half of August and may take up to two weeks to complete all the specified work. People who use this trail will need to be aware of the trail work timing and that the trail will be closed during the contract work times. Follow work updates on the BCT FB page.
Contract required work will consist of grading the trail shoulders to facilitate water run-off, crack sealing of small cracks in the asphalt, full depth removal and asphalt replacement of the larger grass filled cracks, repair of soft asphalt spots and then a fog-seal will be applied over the entire length of trail from the end of the concrete sidewalk at the Townsend City limits to the Centerville Road crossing point. The business approaches that cross the trail will not be treated as they are in satisfactory condition.
