When I first jumped in this race for Montana’s Second Congressional District, I had no strong ideas on data centers. But as I campaigned, I saw that so many voters were very, very concerned about them. After listening to the People and studying the problem myself, I realized why they were so worried, and now I completely share ALL of their concerns.
Today, there is a national revolt against data centers in America, and Montana is at the center of it. Thirty miles north of Billings, in the small town of Broadview, a Texas-based company called Quantica seeks to build one of the largest data centers on planet earth. It would be the size of 3,800 football fields. It would consume untold quantities of electricity and water. It would likely turn Broadview into a ghost town; and there is no telling what it would do the Madison Aquifer, a critical water source for the people of Central and Eastern Montana.
Powerful special interest groups are behind this dark project. Their methods are deceptive. Few politicians are opposing them. Many are compromised by their ties to the industry and the lure of quick money.
But, thankfully, the People are standing up. One such group is “Yellowstone County Voices,” a non-partisan group of regular folks who are spearheading a citizen-led initiative in Yellowstone County to place control over these data centers where it belongs—directly with the People. If you live in Yellowstone County, make sure to sign their petition and then get it on the ballot this November.
