“Local News”
We still insist that G.G. McFadden has the finest garden in town.
B.E. Matthews took his son, Lawrence, out on the road for a short trip this week.
Willie Kitto was lucky for once in his life. He was notified recently that his number on the San Francisco Examiner had drawn a $50.00 music box.
The Bone sheep shearing gang returned to town from the Huntley sheds on Friday and, after remaining over Sunday, departed for the Burtt sheds on Duck Creek, where they will clip about 3,000 sheep for Mr. Burtt.
The fourth of July dinner will be given by the Methodist Church on the lot between the Star Office and the livery stable. They expect to have one of the coolest and handiest places for the people to get a good dinner any time during the day and evening after 11:30 a.m.
1925
“New Dance Pavillion for Deep Creek”
The West Brothers are erecting a pavilion at the old Glenwood Place on Deep Creek. The pavilion will be used for dances and other public gatherings and with its ideal location for outings and a pleasure resort, it should prove very popular. The building will be octagonal in shape and is a good size floor. So far, the floor stringers are up and the floor and walls being put in place.
Deep Creek is one of the prettiest and most popular camping and picnic grounds in these parts; the road through Deep Creek Canyon being one of the main highways, much tourist travel going through the pass.
“New Curtain for Auditorium”
Manager S.L. Young has a new front curtain for the stage in the Townsend auditorium and has same in place. The curtain has painted on its surface the picture of Crow Creek Falls and around the picture is a representation of advertisements.
“Turkey Shoot”
Pad Perkins will hold a turkey shoot at the Cartwright ranch near Canton on Sunday, June 21st when both shotguns and rifles will be used. The shoot will begin at about 1:00 o’clock, and every sportsman in the county is invited.
“Big Carnival Dance Saturday Night”
The Merry Maker’s Orchestra will give a dance in Radersburg next Saturday night, June 20th in the form of a real carnival festival. There will be fun for all, spectators and dancers alike. Horns, caps, serpentine, and all the devices that go with a real carnival affair. The hall will also be decorated for the occasion.
At midnight, a chicken supper will be served and a general good time promised for all.
1953
“TV Will Come to Butte in August”
Butte, Mont. - Ed Craney, general manager of the Z-Bar Radio Network, said Monday night in a talk over KXLF that he hopes to transmit the first Montana television programs in August.
Craney said he hopes to transmit the first test pattern by Aug. 15, with programming two weeks later.
He said TV Sation KXLF-TV, Channel 6, VHF, would be served by three networks - NBC, Columbia and Dumont. The Butte studio is nearing completion with some equipment still to arrive, Craney said.
“Local News”
Miss Mary Kieckbusch has returned to her home here from Great Falls, where she graduated from the College of Education of Great Falls with a two-year secretarial certificate and now is employed by the Superintendent of Schools at the courthouse.
Mrs. Josephine Peters went to Dillon Sunday and enrolled in the Western College of Education for a summer course of ten weeks. She was accompanied there by her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Broderick.
1970
“Candidate for State DeMolay Sweetheart”
The 1970-71 Montana DeMolay Sweetheart will be crowned at a Grand Ball June 20 in the University Center Ballroom at the University of Montana, Missoula, during the State DeMolay Conclave. The crowning will be by Michell Brighton of Helena, the Present Montana DeMolay Sweetheart. Conclave dates are June 18-20.
The candidates are selected by each of the 40 state DeMolay chapters.
Candy Whitehead of Townsend is among those candidates who have registered for the conclave so far.
“Who is Where in the Armed Forces”
Larry Holling, son of Mrs. Hazel Holling, is now stationed at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, Texas. He returned recently from a year of duty in Africa and has been promoted to Tech Sergeant.
Sr. Chief Petty Officer Donald Holling, U.S.N., and his family left Sunday after visiting with his mother, Mrs. Hazel Holling and other relatives. They will go to Kodiak, Alaska, for his next tour of duty, where he will manage the commissary there. Mrs. Holling and children have been here the past six weeks with her mother-in-law.
Marine Corporal Michael R. Broderick, Townsend, was promoted to his present rank while serving at the Marine Barracks, Naval Station, Treasure Island, San Francisco. His promotion was based on time in service and rank, military appearance and his knowledge of selected military subjects.
