“The scariest thing for me as a volunteer fireman is when I show up at a structure fire and I’m the only one there. I have to ask a bystander to turn on the water. We need volunteers!” This statement was from ten-year volunteer, Jordon Shearer, who is a member of Broadwater Rural Fire Department.
Shearer, 34, a lifelong resident of Townsend, farms and ranches in the county. Asked why he continues to serve, he said, “We need to support the community. Also, someday it might be me who needs the help. “
Volunteers of all shapes and stripes can sign up for short periods or for the long haul. He said the department can find jobs for both men and women, no matter their physical shape.
Over 20 volunteer firemen and their wives prepared breakfast Saturday morning at their annual Mother’s Day Breakfast to fix sausage, eggs, pancakes and all the fixings. According to 20-year volunteer and veteran, Larry Virnig, who volunteers with the Duck Creek Fire Department. “We served 65 people. Usually, we have a full house for this fundraiser.”
Monies from the fundraiser go to purchase supplies such as food and water or Gatorade for the volunteers working in fire situations or for equipment they need, according to Sheree Beauchamp. She and her husband volunteer at the Toston Fire Department.
