Townsend residents have recently realized we are about to celebrate 250 years of our country’s founding. American Legion Post #42 members hung new USA 250 flags to commemorate the occasion on May 2nd.

According to Tim Pool, the group hung about 50 flags, both on Broadway and Front Street. All parts of Post #42 participated, including Post members, Women’s Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion, the group who organizes the free Thursday dinners at the Legion.

Pool, who is organizing the Legion’s part in Townsend’s 4th of July parade, had ordered the flags in February with the celebration in mind. He pointed out the flags will fly above the Rotary banners on each pole. Each flag bears a bald eagle, the cross and the words “250 years of Freedom.”

Pool feels strongly about the celebration: "I’m very patriotic. I think we are actually living history at this moment with the celebration. I think we should be excited about celebrating the occasion to honor the history of the families and their loved ones who served our country.”
