Richard “Dick” R. Black, 80, of Helena, passed away in the early hours of March 18, 2026, at his home.

He was born on August 12, 1945, to late Fred and Vera Black. Dick was a graduate of Townsend High School and then attended the University of Montana Western in Dillon. He enlisted in the US Navy, serving overseas during the Vietnam War. After honorably serving his country, Dick became a Gas Service Technician with the Montana Power Company in Helena and retired after over 30 years of service.

Dick spent his life enjoying the outdoors: hunting, fishing, and camping with his sons and close friends. Dick always had a project or two in the works and gave his time freely to anyone who needed his handyman skills. He continued these hobbies into his retirement, with his surviving partner in life, Nina Denzin.

Surviving family members also include two sons, Jason (Tracey) Black of Polson, MT and Ryan (Rachel) Black of Helena, OH; honorary daughter, Laurie McPherson; seven grandchildren, Ashleigh Taylor, Tyra (Colin) Taylor, Jeffrey Taylor, Dalton Black, Kelsey Black, Trent Black, and Morgan (Andy) Merrick; three great-grandchildren, Jason, Emmett, and Alena; and a sister, Beverly Schmit of Helena.

He was preceded in death by siblings Donna O’Leary and Glen Black.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no scheduled visitation or services. A private gathering of his immediate family will take place at a later date.
