Residents in Montana are being targeted by a text scam pretending to be from the Department of Transportation, claiming you owe toll fines. The scam has resulted in over 200 calls to the DOT and includes a link that could compromise personal info.
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has alerted residents to a new text scam circulating across the state. The scam suggests that residents owe fines for toll roads, which do not exist in Montana.
MDT reported receiving more than 200 calls in the past week regarding this scam. The scam texts, which first appeared at the beginning of the year, had faded but have now returned at an alarming rate. They appear to be from MDT, urging recipients to pay "toll dues" or face consequences such as vehicle suspension, legal action, or credit damage.
