Plymales Honored at Ag Appreciation Dinner

MT43 News Staff Reporter

Ranchers Chuck and Carole Plymale were honored Saturday night at the annual Broadwater Conservation District dinner, Ag Appreciation Day. The Good Neighbor Award is especially fitting for the couple who ranch at the foot of Duck Creek Road off Highway 284.

Plymales represent the epitome of keynote speaker Jeff Mosley’s commentary. Mosley is an MSU professor of range science and management at Bozeman. Things are different in Montana now, he said, but Montana ranchers and farmers must keep their values in being empathetic to newcomers, reaching out to help them understand our fragile land conservation ethic

Plymales run a generational operation with their children, as did Chuck’s parents. Chuck and Carole have thrown themselves into making ranching a beautiful way of life and Broadwater County a welcoming place to live. Chuck was inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2023. He served as president and secretary of Broadwater Farm Bureau and served as a volunteer fireman as well as brand inspector. Carole taught in Townsend Schools for 19 years, is active on the board of Broadwater Community Foundation and served as musician of the Holy Cross Church. They helped their neighbors with branding and vaccinating. Carole summed it up: " Good neighbors make good neighbors.”

Turn-out for the dinner, held at the Watson Event Center, was exceptional with over 200 people attending. Chef Gayle Watson’s prime rib dinner was served by Broadwater 4-H Club and Future Farmers of America Club members. Conservation District Chairman Dallas Diehl presented the Business of the Year award to Headwaters Livestock Auction and the Steward Award to longtime fisheries management biologist Ron Spoon. Spoon, now retired, has worked with farmers and ranchers and their water projects 36 years.

4-H Club Exchange members offered to “work for pay” during a rousing auction, led by auctioneer Jim Davies, which raised hundreds of dollars for the members’ upcoming trip to Nueces County, Texas this year. They will host the Texas club next year.

Members currently serving the board, in addition to Diehl, are Kelly Ingalls, Darrell Baum, Greg Field, Rick Van Dyken, Jim Beck, Herb Argabright and Daniel Davis.
