Sheriff’s office employees have been busy this month. According to Sheriff Nick Rauser, the impound lot near the Cedar Street Canister Site has been finished. The lot, which has been in progress for some time, will be used to house impounded vehicles. The labor for the building was donated, as was the concrete and pouring from Badger Materials. “We were paying for storage to house those vehicles, so now we have a secure place for evidence,” he explained.
Graymont Western Lime plant donated just under $8,000 to buy the department a new drone for use in investigation work. One deputy will attend the federal drone operator’s class. Rauser explained use of a drone is important in search and rescue operations, especially in Canyon Ferry Lake. Before the department had its own drone, it paid for those services from providers.
Parent Teachers Association members have been active in trying to bring back the School Resource Officer at Townsend Schools. Rauser pointed out that the position is not only about safety in the school, but a large part is about building relationships with kids. Although the Sheriff’s Department is trying to find solutions, they have not been able to find grants that pay for wages. “The SRO position is so important for safety and for quick response to any dangerous situation that may come up,” he said.
Broadwater County has few immigrants, so the Sheriff’s office has had no immigration incidents. He explained, “We are not out actively looking for illegal immigrants. But we do have to be there if federal agents are involved in a case. We need to be there as law enforcement members. We are a nation of laws, so we must follow them.”
