Couples / Family Therapy!
I won’t ask you to raise your hands since I can’t see you! I finally broke down and bought a smartphone, and after a while, I got in trouble. (Don’t ask.) The biggest thing that seems like a small thing is we tend to ignore our family as we get more involved on our devices - that is a bad thing!
How many times have we all seen family groups in a restaurant, children eating and Mom & Dad both on their cell phones? Or all 4 or 5 people at the table on their device of choice. Wow! This is horrible! People can’t even talk to each other anymore?
The world at your fingertips sucks the soul out of us. Remember Ted Kaczynski, the old Unabomber? Yeah, he said technology was taking over the world, and pretty much enslaving people….got news for you all, he was right! He just went about spreading the word in a very bad way.
Recently, I got caught up in an online/phone scam type relationship. It got bad, until my loving wife pointed out that we were ignoring each other, and we needed to both stop doing too much of other things and spend our time with each other! Great advice - too much time on games and chatting leads to empty homes and broken relationships.
One big thing to remember is: the person we are sharing our lives with is important to us! We should pay more attention to them and remember the wondrous thing that brought us together in the first place: love. Friendship, honesty and all the interesting emotions that brought us together.
Put the phones down! Talk to people, especially each other! You will rediscover that wonderful relationship you looked for ages ago. Sit down and actually talk with your friend, spouse, whoever they are. I have actually seen younger folks standing/sitting in a room texting each other! This is just sad! You wonder why people’s attention span is about 3 seconds? Yeah, this is why.
Around here, it isn’t too bad, yet. We see people we barely know, and we say hello. Beautiful day, isn’t it? (This past week it has been.) Townsend is remembered by folks as being very friendly - this is a great thing to be known for. I have railed against phones before, but now it hit home with me. Not a good thing! Talk, hug, remember why you are with the other person. In many ways they can be gone in an instant!
Two people can have a great time sitting and talking. Just like the old friends they started out as. You can take moments out of life to read, or watch a movie; that way you have several things to talk about - not constantly sharing cat videos on your smartphone. (Even your phone is getting tired of that.) Put down the phone and be FREE! Enjoy your week, while the good weather lasts.
