Artificial Intelligence - What's the Big Deal?

Some of you may remember reading articles I have written about AI (Artificial Intelligence). They were all humorous - at least I thought they were - recountings of my dealings with AI. I have had some fun working with AI. But AI is not a laughing matter. It is a very serious topic.
AI has been worked on for decades with very little attention or publicity. Then, about 3 years ago, OpenAI announced ChatGPT and made it available to the public, and suddenly, AI was the hottest topic in the world. Google announced its AI, Gemini; Microsoft announced CoPilot. Governments announced they were looking into legislation to control AI.
Many of you have money invested in the stock markets, especially people with 401K or IRA pensions. You probably noticed the market has been a bull market, setting all kinds of new highs. Most investment experts are calling the current market an "AI Bubble".
Large companies like Microsoft, Google, Meta, manufacturing companies, insurance companies, etc. are investing heavily in building AI infrastructure.
Many experts are stating that eventually, most office jobs will be replaced by AI. Computer programmers, engineers and tech support people will all be made obsolete.
AI is very data and computational heavy. Big AI operations require huge data centers filled with massive numbers of large servers. Montana has been looked at as a location for several of these large data centers.
So why would you care? Your pensions are increasing dramatically due to the AI stock market bubble. If Montana is selected for data centers, someone has to build them. Good construction jobs, high property tax income - that sounds good! And my numerous humorous experiences indicate AI is not really ready to take over the world.
What is to worry about?
A lot!
I am planning to write a series of articles about AI. I hope to explain how AI actually works ‐ without getting too technical. I intend to show you where AI shines, where it is weak and why it is dangerous.
