Mary Ellen Schnur

The public will have a great opportunity next Monday evening, January 12, to learn more about protecting themselves from theft, fraud, and unfair business practices, more commonly known as scams. Broadwater County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the program at the library community building.

Representatives from two state agencies will present information and answer questions.

The Office of Consumer Protection, a division of the Department of Justice, is charged with enforcing laws designed to protect consumers from unfair and deceptive business practices; investigating false, deceptive, or misleading business practices; and enforcing laws related to telephone solicitation or telemarketing. OCP also provides consumer alerts and consumer education.

The Commissioner of Insurance and Securities Office regulates insurance and securities (think investments). The office educates and licenses insurance and securities agencies. It verifies that insurance companies and securities firms are financially sound. It enforces actions against insurance fraud or financial fraud. New concerns are cropping up in the securities area with cryptocurrency becoming a medium of exchange. CSI is also charged with educating the public to avoid financial misfortune via insurance or security fraud.

In this day of instant communication, it is more important than ever for folks to know how to protect their own financial well being.

Broadwater County Farm Bureau is looking forward to hosting a good crowd at the program Monday evening, January 12, 7 p.m. at the library community room.
