American Legion Post #42 Hosts Free Thanksgiving Dinner

MT43 News Staff Reporter

How many people can you serve a free turkey dinner when an oven quits working? Answer: 85 people. That, according to American Legion Post #42 Commander Linda Cousineau. Linda said it was touch-and-go when the Legion crew realized they had only one oven to cook several turkeys and hams. “I hurried to Karen Susag’s house to use her oven for warming the hams, then hurried back to pick them up. It all worked out,” she laughed.

The dinner, on November 22, was free to the public. Linda said they advertised the event heavily online and in the paper and put up flyers everywhere. The traditional dinner included special salads, potatoes and gravy and dressing, along with several kinds of desserts. Several people came in, had free dinner, then stayed to watch the Bobcat-Grizzly football game.

Cousineau said the members decided to do the dinner because they felt it is one of the most important meals they could provide to those folks in the community who do not have family or have come on hard times.

Legion members who worked on the dinner included Dean Nygard, Mark Boaz, Karen Susag, Holly and Troy Hendrickson, Debbie Westfall, Bill Desfosses, Penny Nienow and Karen Kougioulis. Linda would like to thank all who helped with the dinner or contributed in any way.
