Helen Keller, in 1925, gave a speech at the Lions Clubs International Convention and asked the members to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness”. Since then, vision and hearing care have been the primary focus of Lions Clubs throughout the world.
The Broadwater County Lions Club conducts vision and hearing screenings and participates in a program to recycle eyeglasses and hearing aids. Eighty pairs of eyeglasses and five hearing aids were recently delivered to the program. Individuals wishing to donate used eyeglasses or hearing aids may deliver them to Reading Leaves, Opportunity Bank or Mountie Moose Bakery.
The club also provides assistance to qualified individuals for the purchase of eyeglasses and hearing aids. Assistance was recently provided for the purchase of a pair of hearing aids.
The income from the sale of those famous Lions Corn Dogs allows the club to support the vision, hearing and other local programs.
