Canton Church
On October 8, the Townsend Middle School seventh-grade class had a field trip to the Canton Church. This was the 8th annual (excluding the Covid year) that the Canton Church sponsored the history field trip.
The students attended a short history of the Canton Church and a longer history of Broadwater County. The seventh graders are the class studying Montana History and the history books have very little mention of Broadwater County. We feel it is important that the students learn about the history of Broadwater County and maybe we can kindle some interest in history that will last a lifetime.
After the presentations, the Canton Church provided the students with a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies and water. The students had some time to relax and enjoy the park at the Canton Church before heading up to St. Joseph's Cemetery (the Canton township cemetery).
The Canton Church had another successful slate of summer events – although with some challenges. Every summer we do six events at the Canton Church: two in June, two in July and two in August. We plan our dates the year before and we work around the 4th of July weekend and Rodeo weekend.
This year the Rodeo weekend moved from the first weekend in August to the second weekend which meant we had to switch our scheduling. We also had some performers that we truly wanted to be at the Church whose schedules just did not match up; so, again, we changed our dates to make everything work.
This summer we had a new performer: Kamala and Friends. Kamala Murphy is a student at the University of Montana and is an outstanding musician and singer. Carrie Crouse, an internationally famous violinist, recommended her. Kamala, her father and another musician put on a tremendous performance.
This summer we had our biggest attendance numbers since COVID. It was nice to see the Canton Church filling up again!
The Canton Church Board thanks everyone who attended an event this summer. Having a full church warms our hearts. Remember, the Canton Church events are always free – although we do accept donations!
