Headwaters Cross Country Invitational

MT43 News Sports Reporter

It was certainly a good day to have a good day! Last Friday, October 3rd was the Headwater XC Invitational hosted by the Three Forks Wolves. Always an important meet as it is a beautiful flat course which always makes for lightning-fast times for our Broadwater Bulldogs. Almost the entire team had their personal best times (PR) or season best times (SR), which made for smiles all around, despite the team missing their homecoming parade.

The Junior Varsity Men and Women took to the course together with Gavin Johnson (20:52 PR) in 14th, Isaiah Lapsley (21:18 PR) in 17th, Urijah Duede (22:15 PR) in 21st, Trey Coker (24:12 PR) in 30th and Wyatt Coker (29:11 SR) in 40th for the Men. The JV squad took third overall with sixty-seven points.

For the Ladies, it was Logan Barkhurst who clocked in at 25:49, placing her in 10th and qualifying her for state, proving why she was chosen as a homecoming queen candidate in her senior year. Teammate Fiona Nelson logged her season’s best time of 32:51, finishing in 29th.

For the first time this season, the Varsity Men and Women also ran a combined race. Kyla Meissner (18:51 PR) was the first woman to cross the line, more than a minute in front of her closest competitor. Elaine MacDonald (20:32 SR) sprinted past her male teammates at the line to finish eighth, while teammate Arabella McDaniel (22:58 PR) had to find room to whisk past another runner for 27th position. Rounding out the team were: Shalyn Sentinella (24:31 PR) in 38th and Addy Mosher (24:50) in 40th, who finished collectively in fourth with 102 points.

The Varsity Men’s team took fifth place overall with Dallas Fligge (17:40 PR) leading the way in 10th place. Gavin Green (17:59 PR) clocked his first ever time sub 18 minutes in 15th. Clayton Rice (19:17 PR) and Rylan Hoveland (19:32 SR) were next in 29th and 31st. The Bulldogs were coming in one after the other with Luke Tullos (20:18 SR) in 42nd, Sam Flesch (20:33 PR) in 43rd, and Keaton Cavasos (20:33 PR) in 44th.

By the time you read this, the Bulldogs will have competed on Thursday, October 9th at the Capital City 7 of 7 Meet, a daylong event with a unique format where there are nine separate races; more details in next week’s roundup.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the last regular season meet, which will see our Bulldogs joining the Crosstown Meet in Helena on Wednesday, October 15th at 4:00. With the absence of a home meet this season, this meet will serve as Senior Night for five XC athletes, so join the festivities at Bill Roberts Golf Course an hour before race time.
