Townsend’s middle school cross-country runners competed in their first meet of the season at Pony along with their high school “bigs.” This was certainly a challenging course, in both topography and distance, especially for their first meet of the season. Middle school runners compete at different distances each meet, depending on the course, with two miles being their longest distance.

A quintet of sixth graders makes up the boys’ team. All of them were running their first-ever race and judging by the results, the future of running in Townsend is bright!

Carter Christiansen’s older siblings, Tyler and Sara, were among our top 5K runners, so his second-place finish in 13:41 was family business. Jacob Hildreth looked equally strong, stopping the clock at 14:35 for fifth place. The rest of the team finished as follows: 11th Calvin McCauley (16:02), 16th Liam Easter (18:29) and 17th Bennett Kirksey (20:16).

The girls’ team has a bit more experience with seven eighth graders and two underclassmen. That experience showed when Kathryn Six crossed the finish line in seventh with a time of 15:32. Sixth grader Kaylee Flynn (15:51) was right behind her in eighth. Rounding out the team were: 11th Courtney Webber (16:42), 18th Kensley Sangray (17:35), 19th Lydia Brakefield (17:37), 27th Abygail Osborne (18:30), 33rd Anna Busscher (20:54), 35th Sky Sellay (22:19), 37th Erilyn Strait (24:41).

The middle schoolers have a busy week with a trip to Montana City on Tuesday, September 16th and traveling to Mountain West with the high schoolers on Saturday, September 20th.
