US Congressional Candidate Speaks to Broadwater Democrats

MT43 News Staff Reporter

Brian Miller has decided to dip his toe in Montana politics. At a regular Broadwater Democrats meeting last week, Miller, 53, a Helena attorney, announced he will be running for US House District 2 in the fall of 2026.

Miller said that although he has litigated many kinds of cases, immigration is the most meaningful to him. He expressed strong feelings about people being stopped on the street and hauled off to detention centers without legal recourse. If he should win the seat, he would change policy by sponsoring a bill in Congress to stop this action. He emphasized that independent voters, along with both sides of the political spectrum, are not in favor of what is happening to immigrants. “Nobody on either side of the aisle supports this policy. We must get a bill through Congress to stop this," he said.

He posed the question: “If the current immigration policy puts 500,000 people a year in detention, who will pay for them to sit in prisons? We will- the taxpayers.”

Miller delved into the effect of tariffs on the US economy. He said he feels the US Democratic Party is not getting out the message to give control of setting tariffs back to Congress.

Miller gave some of his campaign platform ideas to include universal childcare and a tax cut rule that would include tax cuts across the board. His example: If a tax cut of $3,000 goes to the middle class, then that same amount applies to everyone, both above and below the middle class. He is in favor of reinstating Medicaid to people so that providers in rural hospitals can remain in place, thereby keeping those important services available. In an article referred to at the meeting, eight rural hospitals in Eastern Montana near Indian Reservations are set to close. His platform would also include lowering insurance premiums across the board for everyone.

If he wins a seat in the primary, Miller will be running against incumbent Troy Downing in November of 2026. Currently, 29-year-old Sam Lux of Great Falls has announced his candidacy for the seat as well.
