Supporting and educating youth in the shooting sports has always been a cornerstone of the Broadwater County Rod and Gun Club (BRGC), and BRGC was proud to support the Montana Scholastic 3-D Archery (S3DA) Outdoor Target and 3D State Shoot on Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Fifty-five shooters from across Montana participated in the two-day championship at the BRGC Indian Creek Range in Townsend. Two local shooters, Caleb Crush and Theo Peachey, participated in the event.

Shooters from ages five to twenty shot in multiple divisions to qualify for the Western 3D and Outdoor Target National Championships in Helena from July 24 to July 27, 2025. Shooters in multiple categories based on age shot field targets on Saturday and life-like 3D animal targets on Sunday. Field targets ranged 18 to 60 meters (based on age), and 3D targets averaged 40 yards.

The mission of the Scholastic S3DA is to “foster, educate and guide youth in the areas of indoor target, 3-D, and outdoor target archery as well as safe, ethical bowhunting practices.” The goal of the S3DA program is “to provide archery and bowhunting opportunities for young people in after-school settings as well as with archery-affiliated clubs and businesses in the community.”

Montana S3DA “is dedicated to growing youth archery across the state through safe, competitive Indoor, 3D, and Outdoor Target archery.” The organization helps children build skills, confidence, and community – on and off the range.

There are currently three S3DA clubs in Montana. They include the Elkhorn Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) in Helena, Little Belt Archers in Great Falls, and Big Sky S3DA in Missoula. To learn more about Elkhorn JOAD in Helena, contact Cris Kenny at criskenney08@gmail.com.

JOAD is a program of USA Archery that helps archers enjoy the sport recreationally or progress to the excitement of competition. JOAD “offers barebow, recurve and compound archers the opportunity to learn range safety and proper shooting technique in an environment that also fosters focus, increased self-confidence, and team building skills.”

JOAD is open to youth archers between the ages of 8 and 20 and is designed to grow with the youth archer. JOAD offers introductory classes that teach the fundamentals of proper shooting form. As the young archer develops, they will learn more advanced techniques and earn achievement awards.
