Local Runners Shine At Governor’s Cup

The Governor’s Cup was back for its 51st running on Saturday, June 14th in Helena. Every year, thousands of runners toe the line to participate in a variety of events, including the half-marathon, 10K, 5K, Fun Run and Kid’s Marathon. Among those runners were a few local runners, who finished well.

Incoming high school junior, Kyla Meissner was the fastest woman to finish the 5K race with a time of 20:57. She finished 11th overall and 1st among her age group. Kyla finished 3rd in last year’s Gov Cup and was the Independent Record’s 2024 female All-Area Cross-country Runner of the Year. She will return to XC this fall for the Broadwater Bulldogs.

Recent BHS graduate, Kaelyn Sangray finished 2nd among the women at the 10K distance at 46:04.9. She was 1st in her age group and finished 13th among all runners. Kaelyn ran seven years of cross country and six years of track for Townsend and will continue her running career at MSU-Billings in the fall.

Clancy’s Luke Mest, winner of the 2023 5K, crossed the line first in this year’s half-marathon in a time of 1:31:21. Mest, who will be running his second year of cross country/track at the University of Montana.

Held annually on the second Saturday of June, the Governor’s Cup is the primary fundraising event for the Caring Foundation of Montana. The Caring Foundation supports rural communities and underserved areas in Montana by providing access to critical care through its Care Van Program.
