Historic Canton Church Summer Events Kick Off

The first Canton Church Summer Events will be on June 13. The Historic Church will host Linda Huth, Broadwater County Museum Curator, speaking on the extraordinary story of the Cowan Party, from Radersburg, on their visit to the newly created Yellowstone Park.

In August of 1877, George Cowan, of Radersburg, and his party, including his wife and several others, went on an adventure to Yellowstone Park. They camped there for a week and on the morning of August 24, prepared to be on the road home. During this preparation, they were approached by a group of Nez Perce Indians.

The Nez Perce were members of Chief Joseph's tribe on their epic flight across Montana. The story of George Cowan's experience is an amazing story of misfortune and extraordinary perseverance.

Linda Huth has been the curator of the local museum for 15 years and has presented several talks about local history. Linda is a strong supporter of the Canton Church and a frequent speaker at the Historic Church. She has also given talks at the museum and some local businesses in Townsend. She is a member of a family with a history of 8 generations in Broadwater County. So local history is of great interest to her.

The museum, located at 133 North Walnut Street, will end its season on September 15th, so if you haven't visited, you still have time to do so.

The Historic Canton Church was built in 1875-1876 and is one of the few surviving buildings from the town of Canton, which was flooded during the creation of Canyon Ferry Lake. All of our events begin at 5:00 pm, but the Canton Church will be open to visitors from 3:00-5:00 pm before events.
