Cowboys and fathers! Icons! Each are widely admired in their own right, but when both attributes exist within one man it becomes “bigger than iconic,” ya reckon?

With Father’s Day just around the corner, I wanted to pay special tribute to all the dads out there who have embraced and edified the roles of ‘cowboy’ and ‘father.’ For those of us who cling to life in the West, these special men have been front and center, and I believe we are better because of it. I have no doubt that the meaningful ‘cowboyisms’ that have shaped these gentlemen serve them quite well in the role of fatherhood!

Some of my favorite cowboyisms (phrases, sayings, slang terms that express wisdom, humor, or a particular cowboy attitude):

“Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.” – Highlights the importance of bravery and resilience

“Don’t squat with your spurs on.” – A humorous warning to be mindful of one’s actions.

“Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear, or a fool from any direction.” – A cautionary saying about avoiding trouble.

“A cowboy’s word is as good as his rope.” – Emphasizes the importance of keeping one’s word.

“We’re burnin’ daylight!” – Reminder to stop wasting time and be productive.

“If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.” – Advice to avoid making a bad situation worse.

“Always drink upstream from the herd.” – A tip for staying healthy (and avoiding contaminated water).

“Pull up your bootstraps.” – Don’t give up. Keep working hard. Perseverance.

“Speak your mind, but ride a fast horse.” – Be authentic and have integrity, but some situations may require an exit strategy.

“Trust your neighbor, but always brand your cattle.” – Trust is a wonderful quality, but business is business. Be wise.
