Superintendent Susie Hedalen Applauds Signing of HB 357, Expanding Career and Technical Education for Montana’s Middle Schools

Helena, MT — Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction Susie Hedalen is celebrating the signing of House Bill 357 today as a significant step toward strengthening career and technical education (CTE) opportunities for middle school students across the state.

HB 357, sponsored by Representative Eric Tilleman, ensures dedicated funding for CTE programs in middle schools, empowering students with early exposure to career pathways in agriculture, business, health occupations, industrial technology, and family and consumer sciences. This investment helps Montana students build technical knowledge and hands on experience, laying the foundation for future success in high demand fields.

“I want to thank Representative Tilleman for his leadership in bringing this bill forward and the Montana Legislature for recognizing the importance of career and technical education at the middle school level,” said Superintendent Hedalen.“Montana faces a growing demand for skilled workers, and employers across the state are looking for professionals with both technical expertise and practical experience. HB 357 responds to this challenge by providing the resources necessary for schools to foster career exploration, reduce dropout rates, and connect classroom learning to real-world applications."

With the passage of this bill, the Office of Public Instruction will work to develop and implement guidelines for distributing funds to ensure schools can effectively expand their CTE offerings. Superintendent Hedalen emphasized the importance of this investment:

"The OPI team and educators across Montana are ready to build the bridge between education and industry. Sparking students’ interest and beginning the career exploration journey in middle school will help our students be engaged in their education and see their incredible opportunities for years to come! By supporting career and technical education in our middle schools, we are not only equipping students with the skills they need, but we are also strengthening Montana’s workforce, economy, and communities."
