The annual Donkey Basketball is a fundraiser put on by the school’s Bulldogs Beyond club. This club gives students the opportunity to travel with their class and see the world. They travel every other year to different places. Last summer, a group of 20 visited Greece and Italy. In the summer of 2026, a group of 33 will go to Germany, France, and Switzerland.
On Friday, the 18th, the gym was packed. As the last seats filled up the teams were announced and the first game between 'How to Train Your Donkey' and 'Outlaw Donkey' took place. The rules are simple. Four members of the team must mount the donkeys and must have contact with their donkeys at all times. The fifth member of the team is in the middle and is there for the jump ball. After the jump ball, this teammate is responsible for getting the ball after the other team has scored. They can also steal the ball, if the other team gets close enough. They must stay in the center circle, and really provide as the number one fan when they aren't close to the ball. The hardest part of this game wasn't necessarily the basketball portion, but actually riding the donkeys. As riders tried to mount, the donkeys kept walking away.
At halftime, the five members on the court were replaced by other teammates and the game continued. In this first match, 'How to Train Your Donkey' won and both teams returned to the sidelines to watch the next game. 'The Good, the Bad, and the Donkey' and 'Donkey Desperados' took the court next, and it was eventful to say the least. Scarlett McDaniel didn't let anything stop her from getting the ball. She was often jumping on and off of her donkey and sometimes ended up sprawled on the ground, scrambling for the ball. 'The Good, the Bad, and the Donkey won the round.
During this break, friends and family from the stands took their children to the donkeys. The kids had their pictures taken with the donkeys and ran back to the stands when their turn was up. The third and fourth place game took place after this break. 'Outlaw Donkey' and 'Donkey Desperados' battled it out with 'Outlaw Donkey' coming up victorious. The final game was one of the livelier games. The fans were both laughing and clapping to cheer for those on the court.
'The Good, the Bad, and the Donkey' took on the 'How to Train Your Donkey' in the last game of the night. The gym was electric and the crowd’s anticipation was high. 'The Good, the Bad, and the Donkey' won. Then the trophies were presented. The top three teams received their medals and individual trophies. Teacher Levi VanZee received the Fearless Leader award as he was always pumping up his team before each game. Brett Poe was given the 'Most Entertaining' award. Brett was the goofiest on the court, wearing a fabulous tutu and sunglasses. Scarlett McDaniel got the 'Floor Sweeper' award for how hard she fought for the ball on the court, often falling from her donkey. Other awards were given to Cory Sievers (MVP Scorer), Beijin Smith (MVP Assists), and Tanner Therriault (Bronc Buster).
This was a fun night for everybody involved. There were lots of laughs and stories that will be told over the next family dinners. Bulldogs Beyond is appreciative of how much the community supports them and looks forward to the next fundraising event.
