Why Don’t the Creators Create Something Original?

I’m talking about movies, not US. We are all original & unique, each of us is our own person. (I’m not going to get all “why are we here" crazy.) At least not today. How many times must an original film be remade? I have seen all the Ape movies I care to, thank you.

They are even making movies out of old video games now! Has all the original thought run dry? It's like Western books, or worse, ALL romance stories. Several years ago, a friend of mine figured out that with all romance stories there are about 7 plots. That’s it, all the rest are rehashes. Change a character’s job, or reverse their order in the book/movie; poof, all new plot.

Some I can see are “sequels” to the original films, ok, but after a few years, there is a NEW, improved film. YEAH RIGHT! Ever see the movie “Overboard?” Nice fun film Goldie Haun, Kirk Russel. Lady- rich, guy- poor carpenter. But now there is a new one: man- rich, lady- poor. Gee what originality, NOT!

With the superhero flicks, at least they have decades of plots from which to choose. There are so many stories in human life to choose from, why are they making movies about “Super Mario” go-kart people? As if history was not full of great stories, these “Hollywood Types” have no imagination anymore.

Remember “Harvey” an average guy walks around and is friendly with everyone, he just happens to see a 6-foot white rabbit. He’s harmless but everyone thinks he’s nuts. (Been there, done that.) but that was a great film, all imagination! Other than animated cartoons today, you just don’t see much of these kinds of films anymore.

Yes, I’m talking as “old grouchy guy', (“GET OFF MY LAWN”) but you can see that our imaginations are not being used today. Everything has to be visual, no thinking involved. It’s sad, but anytime you are downtown, look around, look at how many folks are on their phones! Even in restaurants and bars. Couples sitting there ignoring each other, and their children, most times, if the kid is old enough, they have their own phone. Other than the ordering of food, they do not talk. And people wonder why their kids are anti-social, OH they’re social enough just with strangers 1,000 miles away.

Remember the “Unabomber?” He said that machines were taking over the world. Unfortunately, he decided the way to get people’s attention was to blow them up. The sad thing is…he was right! Recently, I had my phone die, as I use it mostly like a watch, it was just an inconvenience. I can look around for a clock.

Every day, STOP, look around you. Think, and do something original, uh… within the law, of course! Be the unique person you were meant to be. In the words of some old dead Roman guy, “Seize the day!”
