Chartered by Congress in 1919, the American Legion is celebrating its 106th birthday in serving veterans, service members and communities.
The veterans’ organization known as the American Legion was created after World War I to provide support for returning soldiers. Since then, the Legion has established itself as the largest veterans’ organization in the world by serving America’s current and former military personnel and their families. Over the last hundred years, the Legion has been a force driven to spur social change, as well as advocating medical benefits for disabled veterans and opportunities to attain higher education.
The American Legion is comprised of 13,000 posts worldwide. There are 118 in Montana. Legion posts are known for supporting communities and local veterans. Posts host social events to encourage camaraderie, serve the less fortunate on holidays and raise funds for local causes.
Today’s American Legion is made up of four entities: American Legion military veterans, the Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion and the Legion Riders. The Legion Hall is located at 211 Broadway in Townsend. Regular meetings are the first Monday of the month at 6:30 PM. Look us up at https://www.legionfamilypost42.org
Broadwater Post 42 in Townsend has provided an honor guard at veteran funerals, scholarships for Broadwater students, and support for community events like Fall Fest and the monthly community dinners and bingo as well as a facility for veterans and the public to go gather in a comfortable atmosphere.
The 2025 American Legion Birthday party is March 15th at the Legion Hall with a no charge (donation accepted) dinner. Ham scalloped potatoes, corn and birthday cake will be served at 5:00 PM. A dance will follow at 6:00 pm with live music by Jimmy Willet.
