Habitat for Humanity Reaches Out to East Helena Homeowners

Helena Area Habitat for Humanity staffers knocked on around 300 doors in East Helena in early February hoping to educate residents about Habitat’s programs to help with small and large home repair needs, Habitat’s Executive Director Jacob Kuntz told East Helena’s City Council February 18.
Perhaps best known for its efforts to build homes for low-income individuals through volunteer labor and future homeowner sweat equity, the organization also offers existing homeowners help with small, “honey-do” repairs, Kuntz explained. Currently, Helena Area Habitat also receives grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Rural Development programs to assist with low-interest loans for critical home repairs, such as roof replacements or accessibility renovations, ranging from $10,000-50,000.
“A lot of people are reticent to come forward” to request assistance, Kuntz told the council. He added that the programs would benefit from having advocates in the community to spread the word.
Kuntz said the organization is also working to meet with the state to underscore the pace of East Helena’s growth and the accompanying need for affordable housing.
