The annual District Student Council meeting was held in East Helena on Friday, February 21. Executive officers Kate Drynan (president), Idil Birgul (secretary) and Karsyn Sangray (vice president) opened the meeting. Drynan and Birgul are from Capital High, Helena. Karsyn Sangray is from Townsend.

The meeting started with an icebreaker before getting into the recap of the year. High school students from Helena, Capital, East Helena, and Broadwater attended. Middle school students from Townsend, Montana City, East Helena, and CR Anderson also attended. The schools went over activities that have happened in their own student councils throughout the past year. Many schools voiced their concerns and discussed what did or didn't work in the other areas.

After the open session, the meeting addressed new business. At the end of this section, there was an election for the new officers. This is by far the most diverse board in a long time. For the past several years there have only been two schools represented on the board. The 2025-26 year will have four schools on the board. President Idil Birgul from Capital, Vice President Lauren Richardson from East Helena, Secretary Ella Carlson from Helena, Treasurer Louie Parr from Broadwater, and Historian Taylor Larsen who is also from Helena. After nominations, speeches, and elections Helena's Mayor Collins spoke.

New treasurer Louie Parr is an eighth grader from Townsend. Louie was one of the seven middle schoolers from Townsend in attendance. She took the opportunity to build experience for positions later in her Student Council years. She plans to continue to build her leadership skills and is excited about what this next year will bring. Louie said, “I do Student Council because it is a great way to know people. I love helping at school and other people around me. Even just being a representative at my school makes me happy. I bring ideas to the table so that our group has great ideas for the upcoming future.”

Another Broadwater High School student Hayden Poe, who serves as her freshman class president, was one of the five high schoolers from Broadwater. Her favorite part of student council is seeing how other schools operate, so she was excited to attend this event. She listened intently to members of other schools who gave advice and tips on how to create a better environment for the students. As a class president, Haedyn has had the opportunity to lead some committees throughout the year. So far her favorite committee was the winter dance committee. She loves the creative ideas that her group came up with and was able to put them together to pull off a successful dance. Haedyn said, “I joined student council to better my leadership skills and for my future education.”

This meeting was a great opportunity for the district's individual schools to obtain ideas and learn what works for them. We wish good luck to the new officers and are looking forward to what they plan on doing in the next year.
