A student or member of the public interested in applying for this scholarship must be a

Broadwater High School senior, or a Broadwater County native or current resident.

Hugh van Swearingen was a long-time member of the Townsend Rotary Club and a Montana native. This scholarship honors Hugh’s dedication and life-long career in newspaper journalism and his passion for community service. The Townsend Rotary Club is proud to offer scholarships highlighting our past outstanding members whose life provided some of the finest examples of “Service Above Self”. In addition, Rotary also supports the future leaders from this community as they make an important step forward in life by furthering their education.

This Scholarship will be presented to an individual who best exemplifies, by his/her conduct and service in their community, the highest ideals of Rotary and more specifically, displays a personal desire to pursue further education in writing skills for journalism fields such as writing for a rural weekly newspaper, television/radio/media broadcasting, or for a mixed media career. Experience in the field of journalism or grant writing will enhance the resume, as will good grades for high school or college student applicants.

The most important qualities for the applicant, in memorializing Hugh’s life, are a love of writing and interest in people along with the innate ability to listen well and share a curiosity about what is happening in the world.
