The FFA club in Townsend invited sixteen businesses to the school on Thursday, Feb. 6. The businesses were invited to reach out to high school students about potential summer employment. Well-known places such as Deep Creek, C Hangin’ C Mercantile, and the After School Program gave out applications all morning. Separating the grades allowed places that have age limits to reach the right group overall. Freshmen, Sophomores, and then Juniors and Seniors had a period to meet with the employers.

FFA President Amanda Pesicka helped organize the entire thing. She made countless phone calls and worked with the rest of the officers to organize the event. She worked with Ashley Sanderson (reporter), Spencer Braatan (vice president), Aiden Kitto (treasurer), and Gavin Schmele (sentinel). This idea of a career fair came to our school with the help of Three Forks FFA. A few members from the Townsend Chapter went to Three Forks last year to help their school run the Three Forks career fair. The idea came up during the officer retreat held in August. Amanda Pesicka worked hard to get the idea off the ground and pulled it off successfully. She said, “We did this to hopefully get some high schoolers summer jobs. Especially to get that first level of connection. If they are interested in a certain job or career they could reach out again.”

FFA is known for making leaders and well-rounded individuals. This was an opportunity to share these types of experiences with the entire school. This group of five officers worked the entire time making sure the businesses had everything they needed. They also had the idea of gift cards for ‘meaningful conversations’. When a student would have a good conversation with a business, the business would put their name on a piece of paper which was put into a drawing. Lexi Davies, Alex Johnson, Jacob Matz, and Amelya Sims, were all awarded with the gift cards. Ashley Sanderson, one of the key people in making this happen, said, “Back at our officer retreat in August our group made the plans. We had specific groups do certain things and back in December we set up an entire committee. Everyone helped call the businesses to join us.”

Several high school students brought their resumes and picked up applications for their future. All types of businesses were there - construction businesses, Townsend Tire, various food places and even the newspaper. All of the students were thankful for the opportunity to meet more businesses and reach out to them for future employment
