The Broadwater Bulldogs are 2024-2025 State Class B Drama Champions!! This makes it back-to-back-to-back championships for the Bulldogs and head coach Denise Bakkum. The Bulldogs traveled to Huntley Project for the two-day contest along with 337 Class B/C competitors from 48 schools to compete in 18 events.

The meet consisted of four rounds of competition followed by (depending on the event) a semi-final and a final round. Single judges score the preliminary rounds, while the subsequent rounds have three judges a piece. Scores from all rounds and judges are totaled to determine the winner of each event. BHS brought a strong team of 24 competitors to the state meet with 21 of them making the final round of eight. When placing in the finals of an individual event, each competitor earns points for their team; therefore, contributing to the team State Championship.

Junior Logan Barkhurst was beginning to find her groove with her Mime piece by winning the home meet. She built on that momentum by winning the Divisional Championship and wrapping up her season with a State Win in Mime with her crazy “Jaws: A Love Story.” Congrats Logan!

Second-place medals were awarded to two Bulldog entries. Freshman Ava Boaz and sophomore Campbell Kirksey teamed up to present a snippet of “Anne of Green Gables” in the Classical Theater category, where the source material must be at least 75 years old. Sophomore Kyla Meissner followed up her Divisional Championship in Humorous Solo with a second-place finish at state. Her hilarious “As Seen on TV” about Dr. Dib’s miracle cure-all will leave you giggling.

Sisters Scarlett and Arabella McDaniel joined forces with junior Noah Borror for their fun rendition of “Cinderella” in Classical Theater to place 3rd. Also finishing 3rd were a trio of freshmen with their piece about competing students in the “Science Fair” in Humorous Theater. Millie Sims, Haedyn Poe, and Russell Webber looked nervous in the early rounds but found their confidence and finished strong. Also finding their rhythm through the rounds were sisters Aubrey and Savannah Wells, who took 5th place in Dramatic Theater with their take on teen social media use.

Junior Hannah Hall presented the emotional “Funerals are better with tater-tots” for 5th place in Dramatic Solo. Fellow juniors, Jenna Mainwaring placed 7th in Mime, while Creighton Wright and Isaiah Cassiday were “Two Old Men” in Humorous Theater to finish 8th. Seniors Haylie Reinke and Jazlyn Martin teamed up with sophomore Angel Sentinella for “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” in Dramatic Theater, which earned them a Divisional Win and 7th place at state. Sophomore Sarah Morgan and junior Ashley Sanderson competed in Humorous and Dramatic Solo, with presentations about flutes and teenage anxiety.

Townsend’s speech team was led by senior Addi Kraft, whose Medication Mediocracy placed her 3rd in Original Oratory. Sophomore Shalyn Sentinella’s Informative speech on the Rubik’s Cube, while simultaneously solving one, landed her in fourth overall. Also, competing for the Bulldogs in Informative was fellow sophomore Kayley Connor with a piece about 3D printing. Speech events do not allow costumes or props and competitors are expected to wear professional attire.

The Broadwater Bulldogs have now won the team Class B State Drama Championship five out of the last six years! An amazing accomplishment, magnified with two additional second-place trophies in the last eight years. Head Coach Denise Bakkum, along with new assistant coaches Destani Spencer and Jemma Loughery have contagious enthusiasm for this sport and their hard work and dedication to it has resulted in a dynasty here in Townsend. Congratulations Bulldogs!
