BHS Speech and Drama team won the state championship held in Huntley, Montana last weekend. They have taken first for three years in a row. Our Speech and Drama team has always put their best effort into their season and worked hard for this win.

Of the 24 students who attended the meet, Russel Webber, a freshman on the team, placed third at state for his humorous theater piece. He worked along with Haedyn Poe and Amelya Sims. The group was not getting the place level it wanted. The members worked on their piece, which was about a science fair, and made it even better than the original script. The weekend before state the group placed fourth at Divisionals, improving even within a week. This specific group worked through a lot of people. They originally had four in their group and had to rewrite the entire thing to make it work with three members. They learned new lines and did the seemingly impossible task of perfecting their performance. “My favorite part of the season was winning and kicking booty. (Coach Denise) Bakkum was my biggest support. She does coach and helps us improve our piece,” he said.

Another humorous piece, this time a solo, was performed by Kyla Meissner. She did incredibly well throughout the season and was able to place first at Divisionals. Working with a senior last year, she took what she learned and applied it to this year. Her piece, “As Seen On TV”, was about a salesman trying to sell a ‘Fix all Product’. Kyla explained in her piece that “It did cause cancer or death, but it was totally worth it…..”

Kyla portrayed several characters and the symptoms they faced. She bounced between clients and the salesman and made the audience laugh the whole time. “We’ve been winning for a while now. It's something like six in the last seven years. I love Speech and Drama. I’m more confident this year. My favorite thing is team - bonding and coming out of it stronger together,” she explained.

Ending their season with a 1st place win for the team, we’re excited to see what happens next year with our speech and drama team.
