East Helena and Helena High School Students Compete in Annual Welding Event

It was a head-to-head matchup between Helena High and East Helena High in the 13th annual Crosstown Weld-Off on Thursday hosted by the Helena High School American Welding Society Club.

Students dug through scrap metal, chose pieces that would work for their project, then designed and welded the project in four hours. This year's theme was Native American culture.

"The students showed great creativity and sportsmanship," Cindy Galbavy, welding instructor at Helena High, said in a news release. "Congratulations to all the students and the winning teams from Helena High and East Helena High School. Thank you for making the 'Weld-Off' such a great success."

The winning teams were:

1. HHS - RJ Berndt, Corey Rule, Collin Ries, Casey Rule

2. HHS -Nolan Jerome, Bridger Mayhew, Conner Tabbert, Kadin Gazelka

3. HHS - Ryker Kumpula, Jolisa Murfitt, Izaik Murfitt, Sabrina Braden

4. EHHS - Ryder Finstad, Sawyer Finstad, Caleb Queen, Mikeal Wolfe

5. EHHS - Cooper Larson, Reid Larson, Dylan Burger, Karsen Bushnell

This year's judges were from Pacific Steel, Dick Anderson Construction, General Distributing, Iron Workers Union Local 732 and the Wyatt Winfield “Be Tough” Memorial Foundation.

The prizes and gear students received were donated from these local businesses: Pacific Steel & Recycling, Dick Anderson Construction, General Distributing, Northside Welding, Rock Hand Hardware, Iron Workers Union Local 732, Home Depot, Costco, Power Townsend, McDantim, Pepsi and Murdoch's.
