Speech and Drama Club members have wrapped up their season and will go into their post-season. Starting with Divisional competition, held Friday and Saturday, January 24-25, our team did exceptionally well and most of the groups and solos placed. The team had the most Divisional champions in their history. Three teams were rewarded - one in mime, one in humorous solo and one in dramatic theater. They are taking 24 entries to State next weekend.
One solo performer, who has always done phenomenally well, especially this season, is Hannah Hall. Her piece, ‘Funerals are Better with Tater Tots’, is heart-wrenching. Those in the audience or judging can’t help tear up as she delivers. During the performance, she is talking to her little brother, who is in the hospital. While she talks she relates things from their past, whether it was their Grandma's funeral, how their mom was doing, or just random tidbits from the duo's childhood. Hannah placed second during the Divisional Tournament held in Manhattan. Her biggest support through these three years has been coach Denise Bakkum. Bakkum has pushed Hannah and refined her piece countless times to help improve the performer’s placement every weekend. She has high hopes for next weekend saying, “I know I could have done better. I look forward to going to State and hope to get first place.”
Logan Barkhurst, who performs ‘Jaws a Love Story’, placed first and is advancing to State. Logan has worked hard throughout the season to improve her piece, which is a mime presentation. She has several characters she portrays throughout the piece. Some of the characters are a shark, the lady, a lifeguard, and a guy who is in love with the girl. The girl swims out and has her leg eaten by the shark. The lifeguard has the classic slow-motion run out in the water. She ends it by limping off stage with one leg, as her ‘man’ is helping her off. Every part of her piece has the audience in tears from laughing so hard. The team expects great things from her at State.
State will be held in Huntley January 31 through February 1st. The team will perform their hearts out and hopefully bring home some hardware. This has been a successful season for many of the groups and they are looking forward to end on a high note.
