On January 25, Broadwater Robotics’ middle school LEGO robotics teams, the Broadwater Avengineers and Broadwater Brainiacs, competed at Helena College, showcasing their innovation, teamwork, building and programming skills. Out of 18 teams, both Broadwater teams delivered exceptional performances, earning top honors and advancing to the state competition in Bozeman on February 8. Only 7 of the 18 teams in Helena qualified for state, making this achievement even more exciting.

The Broadwater Brainiacs earned 2nd place overall out of 18 teams and 2nd best game score in the robot challenge where they solve puzzles in a 2-minute and 30-second match. Their team members included Skylar Sellay, Kathryn Six, Titus Kirksey, Everett Kirksey, Kay Crusch, Calvin McCauley, Erilyn Strait and Jayden Flynn. The Brainiacs’ well-rounded performance highlighted their success in robot design, core values, the robot challenge, and their innovation project.

The Broadwater Avengineers achieved an impressive 3rd place in the robot challenge and won 1st place in the Innovation Project category for their impactful work addressing mercury contamination in Canyon Ferry Lake. Their innovation project stood out for its depth, creativity, and real-world potential. The Avengineers’ team members included Anthony Grandy, Karter Schmaus, Sam Smith, Trenton Essary, Liam Wells, Cade Culbreth, and Nik Toney.

Both teams’ success at Helena exemplifies the values of FIRST LEGO League, emphasizing teamwork, innovation, and STEM problem-solving. As the Avengineers and Brainiacs prepare for the state competition in Bozeman, their hard work continues to inspire STEM programs in the Broadwater community.

The Broadwater Robotics program is coached by Spencer Sellay, Dr. Lisa Brown, Dr. Adam Six, Bobbie McCauley, Roger Flynn, and BHS senior Max Sellay. Broadwater Robotics is generously supported by STOKE, Townsend Rotary, Schneider Electric, Opportunity Bank, The Lodge of Townsend, Green Wing Excavation, Flynn Hay and Grain, Infinite Hope Counseling, Skreens, Broadwater Family Chiropractic, Wild Pine Creative, Lazy RM Beef, Gianforte Family Foundation, and Department of Defense (DoD) STEM

Congratulations to both teams on their outstanding achievements, and best of luck at state!
