“Teacher Profiles”
Beverly Sample chose teaching because it is just about the most important job in the world today and because she likes kids. She feels that in the past, our whole economy has been based on an increasing population and use of natural resources, now we have come to realize that this can’t go on. “We are on a spaceship,” Mrs. Sample says, “with all the limitations this implies, and we have to completely change our thinking. And what does this leave but education?”
Mrs. Sample, who is in her 10th year of teaching, nine of them in Broadwater County, likes the lower grades (she teaches the second) because they are so enthusiastic and so honest. “They haven’t yet learned to tell you what they think you want to hear,” she says, “and you had better not ask a question unless you want an honest answer, because that is what you are going to get.”
The Butte native, who received her degree from Western, says it is a very gratifying experience to “see the lights come on” in a youngster’s eyes when they suddenly realize they have learned something. She does not believe in having them compete against one another, but has each compete against himself, trying to better his previous work. “It is a thrill to see them so thrilled when they have excelled at something that formerly gave them trouble,” she enthused.
One of the most amusing experiences which she recalls occurred the year that each child’s favorite saying was “I don’t get it”. She heard this until she was almost ill and tried to correct them, one day telling a young fellow who said, “I don’t get it”. “No, I don’t understand,” He replied, “I don’t understand either.”
