Last week the Bulldogs held their annual Harry Hall meet. Under the spotlight, the Townsend Bulldogs took on the East Helena Vigilantes. Although there was no team score, all of the individuals did their best for the team. Captains Hunter Borror, Eric Humphreys, Gavin Schmele, and Parker Hunt all had great matches.

Gavin Schmele wrestled two matches, back-to-back, and was able to pin them both. Gavin, a junior, has had a great season so far. He hopes to bring at least half of the team to State and hopes as many teammates as possible advance to the second day of State. He has helped the underclassman throughout this year by answering their questions and pushing them to be the best they can. His favorite move is ‘The Butcher’ and was able to do this in the Ronan meet on January 3-4. Going into each match he reminds himself that, “Nobody can be as tough as Coach Schnittgen, who wrestled and played football in college, and I have to wrestle him in practice”.

Hunter Borror, who is one of the two seniors, also had two matches pinning his first. One of the things he does before every match is get his head in the right place by praying for himself and his opponent. His coaches encourage him by pushing him through the mental battles that come with wrestling. Borror helps the underclassmen by helping them stay motivated and trying to lighten their load. At the end of the season, he is working towards his goals. “I hope to make it to the state tournament level and finish the year with a winning record.”

The Bulldogs took home some hardware at their last meet, in Ronan for the Western Duals. Gabriella Rico, the only girl on the Bulldog wrestling team, placed second. Eric Humphreys, Gavin Schmele, and Jace Wellestein were able to place third, and Parker Hunt placed fifth. Two members of the team placed in the JV Tournament. They are Aiden Mosher and Konner Swan.

All of the Bulldog wrestling team worked hard to perform well. They will wrestle at home again for the B/C Duals on January 24-25. Their senior night, also the Copper Shamrock, is on Friday, January 31. Divisionals will begin the postseason and will be in Butte on February 7-8. The following weekend, February 13-15, State competitions are in Billings.
