Saturday, January 11, the Townsend Speech and Drama team had their home meet. Everyone performed their pieces amazingly. Whether it was Speech, Classical Theater, or Humorous Solo, they all put extra work in this week to place.

Jazlyn Martin, Haylie Reinke and Angel Sentinella, who performed ‘The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde', placed fourth in Classical Theater. Jazlyn played Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Her favorite part was shooting, and then flirting with Haylie, who played Utterson. Oddly enough, Haylie’s favorite part was getting shot in the piece. Angel, who played Helen, spent her week getting pushed to make sure she didn’t fall in their performance. It's a darker piece so it's not supposed to be happy, but Haylie tries to keep the mood lighter in practice so they are able to work on it and make it better. This last week the team has been adding suggestions from other people on their team to make their piece even better. Obviously, all this hard work paid off when the team advanced through finals and placed.

In Humorous Theater, Jenna Mainwaring and Gavin Nelson performed a hilarious piece in which a genie comes from a Mountain Dew bottle. With her cartwheels and jumps, Jenna's performance was very energetic. As the years have gone by, Jenna has become better and more competitive. She takes it seriously and works as hard as she can to better herself and her performance. Her personal favorite part of her piece is ‘coming out’ of the bottle in a somersault. The best part of Speech and Drama, in Gavin’s opinion, is the people. “One piece of advice I would give underclassmen is don’t worry about it. I think they put a lot of pressure on themselves.”

Not only does the team work together during the weekends to take medals home from meets, but before school began last Fall, they had a retreat at the house of one of the teachers, Mrs. Flynn. They had fun rolling down the hill and working together to build friendships that will last a lifetime. With senior members of the club coming back to judge certain pieces, anyone can see the closeness of the team members. After this week's home meet, they look forward to their senior night and showcase on Saturday, January 18. The Broadwater Community is welcome to watch all of their performances.
